I wanted to go to bed early and I said, "because I'm a lazy girl", but it didn't feel right to say that, even as a joke. So I corrected myself, and said, "actually I'm a tired girl who's been worn down by life."

I'm with my parents on vacation. I was moving clothes from washer to the dryer and realized I had left a tissue in a pocket so everything was covered with little bits of paper debris. As I was shaking them out, I said out loud, "that was not clever, Val." From the other room, my mom said, "please don't be hard on yourself, Val."

My grandmother taught me early by example just to say "I'm gonna have a lie down, there's food in the fridge." Have a good lie down.
