I write contemporary and historical Scottish fiction, often set in the area of Scotland where I live, Aberdeenshire.

My historical novels combine little known dark events with romance. There’s witches and bears and kidnappers and Romans to be found in them. My contemporary writing is a lot naughtier, though still dark and romantic, and coming soon.

Did you know Monopoly was invented by a woman named Elizabeth Magie in 1903?

Originally ‘The Landlord’s Game,’ it was designed as a protest against the big monopolists of her time like Carnegie & Rockefeller.

But it was Charles Darrow, an unemployed salesman, who eventually sold it to Parker Brothers after playing a version.

Parker Brothers credited Monopoly with saving their company. Magie died in 1948 without recognition. Darrow became very wealthy & his legend lives on. #history #women

Taken at Cambridge Botanic Gardens a couple of years ago in Springtime. Just really love this tree.

Today I learned that the Welsh word for microwave is "popty-ping." In a sane world, this would be the only word for a microwave.

Auchencar ‘Druid’ Standing Stone, red sandstone 5m high and thin. There is another that has fallen as shown in pictures 2 & 4, I’m not sure if there was originally just the two, or more in a circle. A few miles up the west coast of Arran from the Machrie Moor circles. This stone felt special. Me for scale on picture 3. #StandingStoneSunday #PreHistory #Arran #Scotland #stones

Taking place mainly in a castle, THE MERMAID AND THE BEAR blends an often overlooked period of history, the Scottish witchcraft accusations, in particular the 1597 Aberdeen witchcraft panic, with a love story.

Our part of Glen Loy is called Erracht - the "meeting place" in Scots Gaelic.

The story of this large stone, now built into an old cairn, is that it was the competition stone used when the five septs of the Cameron clan gathered here.

What the competition involved, I don't know. Presumably just lifting the thing would be challenge enough!

When Morragh speaks to another person for the very first time, she has no idea that he is an invader in her land.

What she does next constitutes a huge betrayal of her people, threatening her closest relationships and even her way of life itself.
